Newcastle United are still flying in fourth place following an impressive 4-0 win against Aston Villa at St James' Park.

Callum Wilson broke the deadlock just before half-time from the spot and the striker doubled his side's advantage in the 56th minute with a header following a well-worked corner kick routine.

Joelinton added a third from close range just before the hour mark and Miguel Almiron made it four with another stunning goal midway through the second half.

And there were plenty of other storylines on show at St James' on Saturday afternoon.

Newcastle United 4-0 Aston Villa: Champagne performance in front of England boss Southgate

Newcastle United turned on the style in front of watching England manager Gareth Southgate to stay in a Champions League place.

It was a day in which Callum Wilson surely came close to booking a place on the plane to the World Cup finals in Qatar. But the afternoon felt like something of a throwback to the Entertainers era as Newcastle piled on the agony for Aston Villa.

Wilson bagged two on the day but also hit the bar to be denied a hat-trick while Jacob Murphy hit the post late on. This really could have been a cricket score, however, fans were delighted with a superb display.

Callum Wilson quizzed on England chances after brilliant performance against Aston Villa

Callum Wilson has reflected on Newcastle United's emphatic win over Aston Villa after bagging twice in front of Gareth Southgate.

The Magpies stayed in fourth place in the Premier League and kept pace with the big boys as Villa were blown away. Newcastle shrugged off the wet and miserable conditions to put smiles on fans faces.

Wilson, speaking to Match of the Day, said after the game: "It was a great performance. For 35 minutes we were slow and weren't really ourselves. It was becoming frustrating. In the second half we blew them away."
