Newcastle United headlines as Harvey Barnes 'keen' on move amid FFP strategy

Here are your Newcastle United evening headlines on Monday, July 10.

Harvey Barnes 'keen' on Newcastle United move as Leicester City star reports to work

Harvey Barnes was back in pre-season training with Leicester City this morning after a weekend of intense talk of Newcastle United wanting to sign the England international.

The Magpies do have an interest and it has been long-term interest at that but the sticking point for Barnes is the asking price. Sources at Leicester confirmed that Barnes was training with the Foxes "as normal" this morning when asked by Chronicle Live.

Of course, things can change rapidly in the transfer window and one phone call can see the player heading for a new destination. However, Leicester are trying to box clever when it comes to sales in the transfer market after relegation.

Barnes finds himself in a similar position to James Maddison last month when Newcastle did express an interest but felt the price tag of the attacker did not match their valuation before he signed for Tottenham Hotspur. Barnes has interest from West Ham while Aston Villa have also been linked and Leicester want at least £40million for the left-sided star.

Newcastle may have found ideal transfer target as owner's words hint at FFP 'pound' strategy

The attraction for Newcastle United is obvious. Harvey Barnes has hit double figures in each of his last three seasons at Leicester City; can hit the ground running given his vast Premier League experience; still has his best years ahead of him at 25; and has already sampled life in every European club competition, including the Champions League.

That first point is most significant. Newcastle may have got frustrated at times against teams that sat in last season, but creating chances was not necessarily the issue. In fact, when Barnes' Leicester side came to St James' in the penultimate game of last season, Newcastle had 23 shots, hit the woodwork three times and had 12 times as many corners yet, somehow, the black-and-whites failed to score in a 0-0 draw.

Newcastle struck the post or crossbar more than any other side in the Premier League (26 times) and, also, missed 69 big chances over the course of the campaign. That is why targeting someone like Barnes makes sense when the winger can score all types of goals - from volleys and well-executed strikes on the counter to tap-ins and scruffy finishes.

Loris Karius snubs partner's transfer advice as Newcastle extension shakes up goalkeeper department

Loris Karius decided against taking the advice of his heavily pregnant partner by signing a new contract with Newcastle United. The German stopper will remain on Tyneside for a further year after his extension was announced over the weekend.

Karius has only featured competitively once for Newcastle, replacing Nick Pope for the Carabao Cup final in February, and as such speculation has been rife that he will seek first-team minutes elsewhere after filling a gap in Eddie Howe's squad.

His partner, Italian sports presenter Diletta Leotta, certainly thought Karius could move to one of Europe's top leagues this summer. Leotta admitted as much when explaining how it would be beneficial to have the 30-year-old closer to her in Italy.

“Selfishly yes, but, at the same time, I wish him the best in his career," she said earlier this year when asked if she wanted Karius to move to Serie A. "We're talking about a boy who has always known how to get back up.

“I don't deny that it would be nice to see him play near me, perhaps around Milan or in Lombardy or in Liguria. It would be much more comfortable than in Newcastle."
