Newcastle United 0-0 Leeds United: Magpies waste big chances as they end 2022 with stalemate

Newcastle United's winning run was brought to an end by Leeds United in monsoon conditions at St James' Park.

The goalless draw means that United at least ended 2022 in unbeaten fashion but Leeds were far the happier of the two teams at the final whistle. The Magpies created some good chances in the second half but were wasteful with both Sean Longstaff and Joelinton blazing over late on.

Despite having 16 goal attempts and 59% possession, Newcastle could not find a winner and the game ended with Leeds, understandably, reverting to time-wasting to secure an unexpected point.

'A new journey' - Kieran Trippier excited by Newcastle United owners' plans for 2023

Newcastle United star Kieran Trippier is excited by the club's "new journey" going into 2023 - and feels that fans are believing in their team again thanks to the Saudi-backers at St James' Park.

Trippier has been part of a £200million recruitment drive in 2022 and says United are back on the map thanks to the major investment from PIF, Amanda Staveley and the Reuben family. With the club pushing for the Champions League and still in both cups, Trippier is confident that a new exciting chapter is about to be written on Tyneside.

Trippier told Chronicle Live: "Yeah of course. You see the new owners, new players coming in and it is a new journey."
