Here are the latest Newcastle United headlines for Sunday, June 18, 2023.
Maddison speaks out
James Maddison says his full focus is currently on England matters despite the growing speculation surrounding his future at Leicester City.
Newcastle United have been strongly linked with a move for Leicester's creative spark and a move away from the King Power Stadium looks increasingly likely this summer after their relegation to the Championship, with the Toon in dialogue with Maddison's representatives.
The playmaker admits being away in the England bubble has been a good way of switching off from the outside noise surrounding his Foxes' future.
"It’s a pause and put the blinkers on and focus on the job at hand," he told Channel 4. "It was a tough end to the season but the positive about the games with England after having a little bit of a break between the last game of the Premier League season and now, it was good to refocus on these games, if it was straight away it would have been more difficult. I am fully focused on tonight and raring to go."
Joelinton's dream debut
Newcastle United favourite Joelinton marked his Brazil debut with a goal on Saturday as his country ran out 4-1 winners over Guinea in Spain. The Magpies midfielder opened the scoring in the first-half as he made no mistake to poke home from a few yards out.
Joelinton fell to his knees at the corner flag of the RCDE Stadium, the home of Espanyol in Barcelona. The Newcastle man could not have enjoyed a better start to life as a fully-fledged international star.
The man of the moment was interviewed at half-time on the touchline and admitted he has been imagining such a moment since he was a child. "I was dreaming in the bedroom, imagining this moment. First game of the national team, it is a great pride," he said.
"I was remembering the time as a child, from the sieve in Sport and all the way here. There was a movie in my head. At the time of the goal it was a dream. I'm very happy."
