Anthony Gordon will wear the number eight jersey vacated by Jonjo Shelvey at Newcastle United. Speculation regarding shirt numbers always intrigues supporters - especially as his former digit at Everton was taken.
The 21-year-old used to don the number 10 jersey at Goodison Park but that is currently held by Allan Saint-Maximin. Arriving midway through the season left few options for Gordon but eight is still a valued shirt.
It has, too, only just become available following Shelvey’s exit to Nottingham Forest. The 30-year-old wore number 12 for his first 18 months on Tyneside but switched to eight ahead of the Magpies’ Premier League return in 2017-18.

Successful players to wear the jersey in recent years include Peter Beardsley, Gavin Peacock and Paul Gascoigne. Gordon is available and in line to make his Toon debut against West Ham United this weekend.
Harrison Ashby could also make his first Newcastle appearance versus his former team. The 21-year-old completed a £3million move to Tyneside on deadline day. A club announcement also confirmed his squad number to be 30, a shirt previously worn by Christian Atsu and Nile Ranger.
