Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe opens up about Kieran Trippier's 'genius' penalty mind games

Kieran Trippier's penalty masterstroke even had his own manager Eddie Howe confused at the City Ground last night.

The impromptu moment left Nottingham Forest keeper Keylor Navas playing mind games with a player that wasn't even going to step forward for the game's crucial moment. But Trippier's piece of genius in stoppage time could now be repeated throughout the football world as Newcastle took things to the next level in terms in terms of getting into the head of opponents during the run-in.

Howe said last night: "I’d love to take the credit for that because it was good, but Alex is our penalty taker. He took our last penalty against Bournemouth and put that away really well.

"Kieran had the ball, so I was a little bit confused, but it was great to see Alex take it so well."

Trippier put in another great performance and kept the team battling even in moments of adversity.

Howe said: "That’s the hallmark of Kieran – I thought he was excellent again today. There were moments in that game where we really needed our leaders because for ten or 15 minutes, we lost our way a little bit and lost our composure.

"There was maybe too much emotion, and I think the leaders in the team just calmed the guys down and we went again."
