Newcastle has been selected as one of the cities that will host an official party for this year's Eurovision Song Contest, with a huge screening set to take place in the city.
Newcastle was one of a number of locations in the running to host Eurovision for the UK, after the European Broadcasting Union ruled that last year's winners, Ukraine, couldn't stage the event. Newcastle City Council launched a bid to get the annual music competition but sadly, after making the shortlist, was cut, before Liverpool beat Glasgow to land the honour.
Eurovision 2023 will kick off in Liverpool on May 9, with the first live semi final; before the second semi on May 11 and then the grand final on Saturday,. May 13. And Newcastle has been confirmed as one of the host cities for a massive screening of the final, with tickets on sale now.
Interest in Eurovision in Newcastle has peaked in the last few years, thanks to the massive outdoor parties held for the final at Central Park in TImes Square, with tickets flying out for the events in 2021 and 2022.
Other cities chosen to stage the BBC events next month are Birmingham, Brighton, Cardiff, Darlington, Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield, with further details to be revealed in the coming weeks.
Commenting on the official parties, Martin Green CBE, BBC managing director of Eurovision Song Contest said: “We’re thrilled to roll out Eurovision to more UK cities. So many people here are huge Eurovision fans and for those new to the Contest they will get to experience the joy of watching the Grand Final surrounded by thousands of others right there in their local city.”
The UK will be represented at Eurovision this years by Mae Muller, with her track I Wrote A Song. At the time of writing she was eighth favourite to win, with former Eurovision winner Loreen, the favourite to triumph for Sweden with her entry Tattoo.
