Newcastle United have offered a mixed reaction to the possibility of a move for free agent Jesse Lingard this summer. In January, most Toon fans supported signing the England international after he was frozen out at Old Trafford.
Ralf Rangnick blocked a move amid reports Manchester United wanted a £12million “survival bonus” in the event of Newcastle staying up. The Magpies comfortably staved off the relegation threat regardless but rumours linking Lingard with a move to Tyneside are recirculating.
A Man United statement confirmed the midfielder’s exit after 22 years, sparking debate about where his next destination will be. While a minority of Toon supporters backed signing him on a free transfer, most believe the club should look elsewhere.
This is how Newcastle fans reacted to Lingard’s departure on social media…
@Birkzy322: "If he hasn't at least halved his wage demands then he can keep moving on. I would love him at NUFC. I said we could do with one more quality, wide attacking player. But we can't be held to ransom when it comes to wages, or it will just get silly and not at all sustainable."
@GJ_1892: "Average player who wants superstar wages. No chance."
@KarlNewcastle: "Get him in I say."
@ChipperfieldNot: "Not for 150k a week."
@dedwards1892: "That ship has sailed."
@AndyAndo09: "Get him, he will add goals."
@theneilsth: "Too much drama and baggage with him."
