Newcastle United are still working behind the scenes on potential deadline day signings but Eddie Howe is only interested in signing "the right player".
The Magpies submitted a loan enquiry for Conor Gallagher but Chelsea have insisted that only a cash deal will see him leave, and not necessarily to one of the Blues' rivals for Champions League places. As Chronicle Live reported this morning Graham Potter does not want to do any favours to top-flight competitors as they struggle to keep pace at the top.
Newcastle aren't the only team that have asked Chelsea about Gallagher with Everton also in touch with those at the top at Stamford Bridge. Gallagher wants to fight for his place but Chelsea may accept bids for the player on the final day of trading.

Gallagher is certainly a player on Howe's wish-list but there has been talk of Crystal Palace - who had the youngster on loan last term - moving in with a cash bid and Chelsea may see that as preferable to sending him north. Newcastle also enquired about Sander Berge in the build-up to deadline day but the Norway international trained with Sheff United this morning.
Things can change quickly on deadline day of course, but Sheff United want a cash deal for Berge with money upfront now rather than the loan with cash at the end of the season deal on offer from Newcastle. A deal for Jonjo Shelvey to Nottingham Forest is expected to be rubber stamped in due course.
