Newcastle shelter expecting to take in 1,000 pets as Geordie owners pushed to brink by rising bills

Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter expects to see 1,000 animals through its doors by the end of the year as Geordie pet owners are pushed to the brink by soaring bills.

The charity says that people are already thinking about making heartbreaking choices between putting the heating on or feeding their cat or dog. As the rising cost of living hits people even harder this winter, the shelter is bracing itself to see an increase in animals needing rehoming as owners find themselves unable to afford to look after them.

Chris Bray, chief executive of Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter, said: “While we’re not currently experiencing a big increase in animals coming in, we’re preparing for what we believe is coming this winter. And we are starting to see a rise in dogs arriving here.
