Newcastle United could line-up with a new look £140million midfield, if they land one of the Premier League's most in demand holding midfielders. The Magpies have been linked with a move for Leeds United academy graduate Kalvin Phillips, who has been one of the standout figures for the Whites since their promotion to the Championship.
The Toon are not alone in their so-called admiration for the midfielder, with Aston Villa linked with a £60million move for Phillips in the summer transfer window. The England international has emerged as an integral part to Gareth Southgate's Three Lions set-up and has attracted the attention of Manchester United and Liverpool in the past.
Recent reports claim Phillips could be in line for a £120,000 contract offer, if Eddie Howe's side are able to agree a fee with the Whites come the summer. The 26-year-old is currently on £25,000 a week at Elland Road and the lure of a sizeable contract may prove tempting for the deep-lying midfielder.

At the moment, interest in Phillips remains speculation, but if he were to make the move to St. James' Park, Howe would boast a £140million midfield trio, a statement that would have seen you laughed at over a year ago. The arrival of Bruno Guimaraes has sprinkled some much-needed class into the Magpies' midfield, even if we are yet to see to see the Brazilian's full potential.
His £40million arrival from Lyon in January was seen as a real coup for United and a signal of intent for their lofty ambitions. Coupled with the predicted arrival of Phillips, Newcastle would boast one of the most exciting duos in the Premier League.
Joelinton also looks to finally be justifying his £40million price tag, rounding off the midfield trio. The Brazilian has been one of Newcastle's standout performers since Howe's arrival at St. James' Park.
Playing in a deeper position in central midfield, Joelinton has shown he has the physical attributes to excel in the role. While the Magpies may be missing a 'number 10' so to speak, the arrival of Phillips could see Guimaraes pushed further upfield or Joelinton given more attacking responsibilities.
The Magpies are expected to be active in the Summer transfer window, given their recent takeover, and the new look Saudi ownership group will give them the funds to kick on and show some ambition. An approach for Phillips would signal that and send a real message to Newcastle's Premier League rivals.
