Newcastle’s favourite karaoke songs uncovered in national survey

Altogether now - what song would get you on your feet for a karaoke singalong? Most people tend to have a favourite and even if they claim not to like the karaoke spotlight, it can be a whole new story after a drink or two.

Several Newcastle bars offer the opportunity to grab a mic and pick a hit and on a big night out aspiring pop stars can be heard belting out sounds across the city. For some it seems that only old favourites and classics will do so their fellow revellers have to brace themselves for anything from Walking on Sunshine to My Way.

Now a new survey claims to have uncovered Newcastle’s top five karaoke tunes following nationwide research commissioned by Butlin's - a company that knows a thing or two about entertainment - into Brits' favourite sing-along song. And our city’s big winner in top spot is Sweet Caroline.

The crowning of the Neil Diamond hit as Newcastle's ultimate karaoke tune to sing along to might not come as much of a surprise given that it's become the soundtrack to just about every sporting event going. The survey was commissioned by Butlin’s to celebrate The Masked Singer new live shows which have been bringing iconic characters to its Skegness, Bognor Regis and Minehead resorts during half-term.

The survey revealed a total top five pick of songs for Newcastle, as shown in the list below, and the research also found that Freddie Mercury is seen in the city as the number one live musical performer of all time and that Dolly Parton is the ultimate artist to sing while performing karaoke.

Newcastle's 'top five karaoke songs'

1. Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond

2. Dancing Queen - ABBA

3. 9 to 5 - Dolly Parton

4. I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor

5. Mr Brightside - The Killers

The survey also showed that almost half - 46% - of adults nationwide sing their favourite karaoke hits at least once a month and 47% say that singing out loud makes them feel good and boosts their mood. Mike Godolphin, entertainment director at Butlin’s, said: “Our new research has confirmed what we suspected all along: Brits love a sing-along and we can’t wait to see the audience belting out their favourite tunes whilst watching The Masked Singer live.”

Butlin's is also running a competition for a family to win an 'ultimate VIP The Masked Singer experience' at a resort of their choice. Those interested in entering can find out here how to go about it. Applications will be open until February 27.
