Newcastle rewarded for shunning 'bling' tactic as Gary Neville explains 'monumental achievement'

Newcastle United securing a top-four finish this season would be a 'monumental achievement', according to Gary Neville. The Sky Sports pundit believes the Magpies are reaping the rewards of the owners adopting a 'pragmatic' approach rather than the 'bling' tactic previously seen after lucrative takeovers.

Eddie Howe's delivered a gritty display to earn a point away at Arsenal on Tuesday night. The visitors were on the backfoot for much of the contest, but the league leaders struggled to fashion openings against the Magpies.

Newcastle have defied pre-season expectations to already pose a threat to the Premier League's elite. Howe's side have already secured victories over Chelsea and Tottenham, while also earning draws against Manchester City and Manchester United.

The unbeaten run from August through to the New Years has raised talk as to whether the Magpies can maintain their momentum and seal a top-four finish. Neville believes despite their current lofty standing, it would still be a sensational outcome for Newcastle to qualify for next season's Champions League.

When asked if he would have expected either Arsenal or the Magpies to be in the top three, Neville told Sky Sports: "No, Newcastle 100% not.

"It would be a monumental achievement for them to finish in the top four, even from where they are now. They're doing all the right things, I expected bling when the new owners came in and they've been pragmatic and measured which has been good.

Les Ferdinand joined Neville and Paul Merson in the Sky Sports studio ahead of kick-off, and was asked if the Toon Army were right to 'dream' of a potential title challenge. The former Newcastle number nine said: "I think where they are now, they're going about their business quietly.

"They're letting everyone else talk about them, and where they are in the division. I don't think they have aspirations of winning the league, of course they will do at some stage. But I think if they finish in that top four this season, it will be a great season for Newcastle."
