Newcastle United suffered their first defeat of the new Premier League campaign on Wednesday night as Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 in the dying moments of the game, giving the Magpies even more impetus to strengthen their side.
Injuries to players such as Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin have already caused huge cause for concern, despite spending more than £120million this summer, and Eddie Howe is determined to not fall short in the remaining hours of the transfer window.
And Newcastle ’s owners have now provided the 44-year-old with extra funds to go out and complete any necessary deals ahead of the rest of the campaign, with the Magpies boss eyeing a new right back and midfielder.
As reported by Chronicle Live, Howe has been told there are extra funds to spend if he needs them, with the former Bournemouth manager eager to bring the right type of characters to the club, although he will only spend on the right players.
The Magpies have already spent around £120million on four new players this summer, with deals for Matt Targett (£15m), Nick Pope (£10m), Sven Botman (£35m) and new club-record signing Alexander Isak (£60m) showing the ambition of the club’s owners this summer.
But more could yet come through the door, with Howe eyeing up cover at right back and in central midfield, following injuries to a number of players of late that have seriously hampered the squad and weakened their strength in depth ahead of the next four months.
Will Newcastle make any further signings before the transfer deadline? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
Jonjo Shelvey, who played such an important role in midfield last season, is not expected to return to action until the end of December after undergoing surgery for a thigh injury in the summer, while Guimaraes has also picked up an injury of late to miss the last two fixtures.
But the Magpies are yet to sign any fresh midfield reinforcements this summer, leaving Sean Longstaff to fill in alongside Joe Willock and Joelinton in that area of the pitch while Shelvey and Guimaraes have been on the sidelines.
However, the St. James’ Park outfit have been linked with moves for the likes of Denis Zakaria, Youri Tielemans and Amadou Haidara on deadline day, with any signing expected to be made on a permanent basis, rather than a last minute loan deal.
Elsewhere, Emil Krafth’s knee injury that he picked up during the 2-1 defeat of Tranmere Rovers in the Carabao Cup last week is set to rule him out for six to nine months, according to Howe, which comes as a huge blow for the Magpies as they lack cover for Kieran Trippier.
Javier Manquillo can operate on either side of the defence, but it is clear that Newcastle’s boss is keen on bringing in another recruit instead. Arsenal ’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles has been linked with a move, but it is now West Ham United’s Harrison Ashby who is being touted as the main target according to the Daily Mail.
The 20-year-old has just six senior appearances for the Hammers since making his debut in 2020, although just one of those has come in the Premier League. Nonetheless, it has been reported that the two clubs are already in talks, although Leeds United are also interested.
