Harry Kane and Heung-min Son left the field with expressions that suggested a new Premier League force is emerging as they took defeat on the chin in the capital.
As Kane left the field - as England skipper - he was keen to show respect to Newcastle while Son walked through the mixed zone and shrugged his shoulders knowing that his team had done everything they could in the second half only for United to survive the onslaught.
Both are world class competitors but Newcastle showed they could live with them in a high octane fixture. Can United keep it up?

Don't forget Spurs had gone into this game having won all of their seven of their home matches in the Champions League and the Premier League this term. But they could do nothing to stop Newcastle from denting their hot streak even with Kane and Son having FIVE shots each!
For all the controversy over Callum Wilson's goal from the home side the fact that Newcastle could have had a penalty at 2-0 shouldn't be swept under the carpet. But even after Kane had got his side back in it, both the England star and South Korea ace Son had no answer.
Premier League teams starting to hate playing against Newcastle now
The Magpies of old would have crumbled in a fixture like this and probably lost their nerve at 2-1 up with more than half an hour to play. But it looked like Newcastle - cajoled by Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope - revelled in the situation.
They seemed to know how to rile Spurs where and when it mattered and they knew how to slow the game down without bringing any more additional time into the situation. Pope even took a booking with six minutes left but he had been building up to it after cleverly eating the seconds away.
United are learning how to irritate teams but that is no different from any great team of the past. There is a time to play football and a time when you make the game work for you.
Eddie Howe a good bet for manager of the month in October
There's still one game left in October, of course - against Aston Villa next weekend - and should Newcastle avoid defeat there is every chance Howe will be crowned manager of the month.
Wins at Fulham, at home to Brentford and now at Spurs - along with the creditable draw at Man United - leave Newcastle unbeaten.
Howe won this award in March but is on course for a second gong as Newcastle gaffer.
