Newcastle nominations for British Restaurant Awards revealed and public voting is open

A total of 11 Newcastle eateries, from a Parisian-style cafe to a Michelin award winner, made the shortlist for the British Restaurant Awards after impressing in three special categories, it was announced this Monday.

In great news for the city's dining scene - and coming on the back of the NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week which helps showcase the best of what the food scene has to offer - venues showcasing a wide range of cuisine have been nominated in the UK-wide awards. And now members of the public have a chance to vote on who should be crowned as winners.

The awards, in their fourth year, are out to raise the profile of British cuisine. They include regional Best Restaurant categories and the top 10 pick of finalists for Newcastle are House of Tides; The Broad Chare; Dobson & Parnell; Blackfriars Restaurant; Route; Aveika; Silk Room Restaurant & Champagne Room; Bistro du Vin; Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill and Peace and Loaf Restaurant.

Many of those finalists have just taken part in NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week, giving diners a chance to try special menus for reduced rates, and have enjoyed a hugely busy week. Aveika on the Quayside is also nominated at the awards for Best Culinary Experience: the only North East restaurant to feature in a London-dominated category. Amongst its rivals are the famous Le Gavroche and Akira at Japan House.

In addition, Newcastle brunch spot Flore, which just opened at the end of last year in the Central Arcade in Market Street, has made the UK shortlist for Best New Restaurant. It is among 10 venues in the category, which again is dominated by London.

Its inclusion - alongside six rivals in the capital as well as others in Sheffield, Bradford and Liverpool - is a huge coup for the Parisian-style cafe and patisserie which is known for its colourful menu featuring the likes of breakfast tacos.

Top UK culinary stars also feature among award nominees and included on the shortlist for the Best Chef award - alongside the likes of Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver, Michel Roux Jr and Heston Blumenthal - is Gino D’Campo who has become something of a regular visitor to Newcastle, where he recently told of how his Quayside restaurant is proving his most successful to date.

The British Restaurant Awards, organised by WRAG (World Restaurant Awards Group), offer an opportunity for customers to nominate and vote for their top eateries, cooks and culinary experiences. Ahead of the opening of the public vote, these shortlists are drawn up from the most nominations received through choices made by readers of publications Chelsea Monthly magazine and The National Post, plus members of the World Restaurant Awards Guide, between January and April.

Following the voting, the list of winners will be announced at a red carpet gala awards show. To register and vote in the British Restaurant Awards see here.
