Newcastle United have already set their sights on a number of transfer targets for this summer and are reportedly leading the way to sign Brentford ’s Christian Eriksen.
The Denmark international has had a remarkable return to the game after fearing he may never play again following his heart attack at Euro 2020. He has since registered a goal and an assist in five Premier League outings for the Bees after joining them in the January transfer window.
And now, according to The Northern Echo, the Dane is wanted by four top flight clubs this summer, of which the Magpies are at the front of the pack.
As per the report, Eriksen’s performances since making a return to football in 2022 have also attracted the attention of the likes of Tottenham, Everton and West Ham. Eriksen is set to become a free agent in the summer after only signing a contract until the end of the season in west London.
His free agent status plays a huge role in the pursuit of the midfielder for all interested parties, with wages the only financial dealings to agree on should they succeed in luring the 30-year-old to their respective clubs.
Erikesen's contribution since his return to action after being fitted with an implantable cardioverter defribrillator has only attracted further interest. The former Inter Milan midfielder has exemplified his technical ability on the ball and his influence on the pitch with some dominant performances for Thomas Frank’s side, who have won four of their last five to move 12 points clear of the drop zone.

It is those performances that Newcastle boss Eddie Howe wants to add to his side ahead of next season. With the Magpies reportedly leading the race for Eriksen’s signature, they could be well on their way to seeing him light up St. James’ Park in what would be another marquee signing for the club.
The Magpies will be confident that their deep pockets will play its part in convincing the midfielder to sign and there is no doubt that they will be able to match whatever any other club offers him, but the trick is convincing him with their vision for the future on Tyneside.
However, a midfield consisting of Eriksen and January signing Bruno Guimaraes starting alongside each other next season is something that Newcastle fans may start dreaming of, in what would be a star-studded duo in the middle of the park.
A return to north London with Antonio Conte’s Spurs may stand in the way of a switch to the Magpies, in which he enjoyed seven fruitful years at the club, while Brentford could struggle to keep hold of him.
