Newcastle has been named as one of the safest places to own a dog

Dogs are a massive part of the family and many see their furry friend as an extra family member. From going to the vets to buying them their favourite dog food many owners care deeply for their pooches and will be assured to know that Newcastle is one of the safest places to own a dog.

Research by tails.com, a dog food company, has rated Newcastle in the top 15 safest areas to own a dog in the UK as the city even makes the top ten. Newcastle has come ninth on the list, just behind Hull and Birmingham and beating Norwich and Cardiff.

The city has the highest number of emergency vets out of all of the top 15 locations, perfect if your pup has an accident, and has many security cameras - 22,000 in total, making sure your dog is super safe. Other factors taken into account included road traffic and pollution.

Overall Newcastle scored 56.4 out of 100, had a lower dog theft rate than Warrington, and was one of the lowest areas for Alabama rot, a disease that kills dogs. York came out on top as the safest place to own a dog, with Plymouth coming second and Swansea third.

Fellow North East city Sunderland also made the list as the 14th safest place to own a dog, with 60 emergency vets, one dedicated dog park, and also low cases of Alabama rot. A new study has also revealed the life expectancy of different breeds of dogs and if you are fancying escaping the city for the day with your dog in the summer weather, you can read here which beaches dogs are currently banned on, to help you plan your day.
