New York-style bar and kitchen to open in Cardiff's trendiest suburb

A cool new bar and kitchen that hopes to embody the flair and style of New York that will offer dining and drinks from breakfast through 'til dinner is coming to Pontcanna - a neighbourhood in the city that recently was named as one of the UK's coolest places.

Opening in a development called the Laundry Quarter in the affluent suburb - which will retail spaces and coffee shops among other things - this summer, Outpost will be able to hold 85 people and describes itself as an all-day venue.

The restaurant cafe, which will join the likes of Heaneys, Brod, Bully's and more in the area - is the brainchild of Nick Saunders, who is the man behind the successful Cardiff events company, DEPOT and its venue as well as being the co-founder of Par 59. Differing from his previous enterprises, Outpost takes inspiration from time spent in the big apple, with its interior design including a mixture of different seating levels, pops of colour and texture - and of course Pontcanna's charming and stunning backdrop.

The design scheme has been built in partnership with Studio Severn (and is worth £300k) and will include a private dining area too which will seat up to 16 people - plus, local businesses can book it out for their meetings. And the food is set to be delicious with local chef and Healthy Hangout head Adam Charles taking the helm of Outpost's kitchen, which between Thursday and Saturday evening will be serving small plates, as well as an 'all-day' menu during the week.

A glimpse of what we can expect from Outpost (Studio Severn)

Speaking about this new venture into the world of restaurants, Nick explained: "My partner Hannah lived in New York for a while and we used to hang out in Williamsburg and Brooklyn a lot; we loved the bars and restaurants in the area, so we want to create something with a similar vibe on our doorstep, here in Cardiff.

"Whether you’re meeting friends, family, colleagues, or popping by for a spot of lunch and a change of scenery whilst answering emails - we want this to be a welcoming space for everyone. We’re also really keen to hear feedback; our intention is for the venue and offering to evolve and grow in line with feedback from our customers and community.

"After months of planning, we now feel like we’ve got a great team in place to build something that the local community will love."

Studio Severn's director Sophie Pascoe added: “It’s going to be really exciting to bring Outpost to life; as an all-day dining offer, the transition between day-time and evening mood has been an important factor in our design plans. We really want to create a light and open space where you can relax with a coffee, along with a sense of vibrancy to enjoy a cocktail when the lighting levels drop.”

Outpost is set to open in the summer.
