Overdose deaths in New York are still falling, but at a much slower pace. About 3,650 people died of drug overdoses statewide in the 12 months ending May 2026, according to predicted provisional counts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's overdose dashboard, which was last updated October 14. That is roughly 8% fewer than the 3,985 deaths estimated for the same period a year earlier.
The slowdown stands out against the state's recent record. New York's Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) reports that the state had 1,800 fewer overdose deaths in 2024 than in 2023, a 30% drop, and that the decline continued into 2025 for a two-year decrease of more than 40%. In an August 31 statement, Gov. Kathy Hochul's office said predicted deaths fell from more than 6,630 in 2022 to 3,775 in 2025, a decline of about 45%.
