New ‘state of the art’ waste recycling plant could create 20 jobs

A planned new waste management plant in Bolton could create 20 jobs.

Evergreen Waste Services Ltd have this week lodged plans to build the ‘state of the art’ plant on a plot of land currently used for vehicle storage on the corner of Waterloo Street and Slater Lane, just to the north of Bolton town centre.

Evergreen want to change the site’s use to a purpose built waste transfer station and recycling facility.

The proposed plant would receive and treat mixed, dry, non-hazardous household, commercial, industrial, construction and demolition waste.

The plans include building erection a steel framed building, storage bays, empty skip storage, site office, steel containers and a weighbridge.

A design and access statement in support of the plans outlined the employment implication if the plant was approved.

It said: “It is envisaged that the proposals would create up to 20 full time jobs, including drivers, administrative staff, plant operatives and site managers.”

The site has previously used for the breaking of vehicles and processing of scrap metal.

The design statement added: “The site is located within a well-established industrial area, located at the junction of Slater Lane and Waterloo Street.

“It is in a predominantly industrial and commercial area with a large scrap yard to the west and other commercial uses nearby.

“Terraced houses are located on Ryefield Street, north of the site and separated by an industrial building, occupied by Town Talk Polish Limited.

“It is considered the houses are an anomaly in this setting of industrial activities and understood they formed originally mill worker’s dwellings.

“To the east of and adjacent to Ryefield Street are the children’s play area and two bowling greens of Darbyshire Park.

“Based on this, the site is therefore considered to be mixed in character.”

The report said the new plant would assist in the management of waste arising from Bolton and Greater Manchester.

Evergreen said no waste would be stored in any external areas of the site which would reduce any impact of dust, odour and pests.

Planners in Bolton are set to decide on he plans in the coming weeks.
