New rail service to connect Manchester and Birmingham airports from 2027

  • London Northwestern Railway has announced a new hourly direct train service connecting Birmingham and the West Midlands to Manchester Airport.
  • The new route provides a direct rail link to England's third-largest aviation hub for the first time in decades, eliminating the need to change trains at Crewe or Manchester Piccadilly.
  • The service will be introduced in two phases, starting with the Birmingham to Crewe stretch on 13 December, followed by the extension to Manchester Airport in May 2027.
  • Intermediate stations served along the route will include stops in Wolverhampton, Stafford, Sandbach, Holmes Chapel, Wilmslow, and Styal.
  • Transport bosses highlighted that the service will offer greener, simpler travel options for holidaymakers while providing extra capacity for existing rail users.
