New plans to protect Troubles veterans from prosecution, government announces

  • Northern Ireland secretary Sir Chris Bryant has announced that the UK government will introduce a major package of amendments to parliament to protect armed forces veterans of The Troubles from repeated prosecutions.
  • The legal changes come after former special forces operators spoke out in The Independent’s podcast, SAS: The Shadow War , raising concerns about ongoing legal jeopardy and historical lawfare decades after the conflict ended.
  • Under the new bill, parliament will establish that there is no legal equivalence between the lawful actions of British security forces and the deliberate acts of terrorists, whilst ensuring operational conflict context is taken into account.
  • The amendments aim to end 'rinse and repeat' legal challenges by treating past court rulings and coroner findings as final, allowing cases to be reopened only if compelling new evidence meets a very high threshold set by the Ministry of Defence .
  • While Sir Chris Bryant emphasised that the legislation intends to bring fair closure for all families who lost loved ones, veteran groups have cautioned that they will wait to review the specific legal details before rendering judgment.
