A new NHS medical centre will open in Manchester city centre later this month — and is part of a drive to build ‘new, exciting, and family-friendly neighbourhoods’ in the area, according to city leaders.
New Jackson Medical Centre is located in the southern end of Deansgate, on the ground and first floors of Elizabeth Tower. Some 8,000 sq ft in size, it will house three GP surgeries — Cornbrook, The Docs, and The Vallance — it will eventually be a hub for around 20,000 patients.
As well as the GP surgeries, it will be able to offer community health services, plus ultrasound and dermatology clinics. It forms a key part of the new Great Jackson Street neighbourhood, which will also include 7,000 new homes, a 210-place Crown Street Primary School — that’s set to open in September 2024 — once built.

That’s alongside a vision to a new city centre park with a children's play area, a 391-space public car park, a dental studio, a health clinic, plus shops, restaurants, bars, and a cookery school. Thus far, 2,100 of the homes have been built, with 850 under construction, and plans in place for ‘4,000+’ more, according to developers Renaker.
Great Jackson Street will not be the last new neighbourhood of its kind, according to Council leader Bev Craig. She said: “Manchester city centre continues to thrive and grow, a testament to Manchester’s reputation as a great place to live, work and invest.
“We want to keep building new, exciting, and family-friendly neighbourhoods with the services residents need. From the outset this has been a priority in the iconic Great Jackson Street area and, by working with the developer, Renaker, the City Council has been able to deliver a new school and a new medical practice that will serve residents across the city.”
The new health centre will also ‘gradually free up capacity for members of the existing practices’, according to Dr Manisha Kumar, Chief Medical Officer for NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care. She added: “It is the first of a number of new primary care developments for Manchester in the coming years.”
New Jackson Medical Centre will be officially open to the public from Monday, June 19, from 8am-6.30pm Monday to Friday. Bosses hope it will one day be operational seven days a week along with extended hours including evenings and weekends.
