New Dundee charity raises more than £5k for Ukraine

A new Dundee charity has raised more than £5,500 for Ukraine with a series of cultural events.

Angels for Bulgaria put on dance shows and food events to collect donations across the city.

The charity was originally set up in 2020 to help causes in Bulgaria but has now switched its sights to support Ukrainian refugees.

Fundraising events in community centres including traditional Bulgarian dancing, costumes and food were also organised.

Stella Ivanova, director and founder of Angels for Bulgaria, said: “So far, media coverage has focused mainly on refugees arriving in Poland, Romania and Moldova. But there are also significant numbers in Bulgaria.

“This first wave of refugees aren’t the poorest, so some of them are managing by themselves.

“But they are expecting a second wave of poorer and needier people, and by then the donations are expected to have lessened significantly.

“So what we are doing is holding on to the donations until they are needed and we will also continue to fundraise.”

Bulgaria and Ukraine have long-established links going back several centuries.

Around 130,000 ethnic Bulgarians have lived in Ukraine, mainly around the Odessa and other southwestern regions, since the late 18th and early 19th centuries when they came as refugees during the Russian-Ottoman wars.

Now their descendants are heading back the other way - to Bulgaria - as refugees of the current war.

Angels for Bulgaria put on dance shows and food events to collect donations across the city.

There are around 79,000 Bulgarian nationals living in the UK, of which around 40,000 are in Scotland.
