New Costa Coffee drive-thru being built in South Bristol

Work is under way to create a new drive-thru coffee shop in South Bristol. The Costa Coffee drive-thru is being constructed in the corner of the car park of the South Bristol Retail Park, next to Ashton Gate Stadium on Winterstoke Road.

Costa Coffee asked for planning permission last year, and it was granted by city council planning officers under delegated powers just before Christmas, without going before elected councillors at a public meeting.

An area of the car park has been fenced off and two trees will be cut down to make way for the new building, which will mean a redrawing of the car park layout at the retail park, which includes a Halfords and an Iceland store. There is already a drive-thru KFC within the retail park too.

The council officer who gave permission said: “The proposed development would be acceptable in principle and would make effective use of land situated within an existing Business Park area. “The design is considered to be in keeping with the character and form of the retail and commercial context and would not give rise to any unacceptable residential amenity impacts. The development would be acceptable in terms of highway and sustainability impacts and, subject to accordance with conditions requested by Arboriculture Officers would be acceptable,” they added.

Costa Coffee have submitted a separate planning application to confirm what opening hours the new drive-thru can operate. The firm wants to be able to open to the public at 5am and close at 11pm each day, but council officers are yet to confirm whether this will be allowed, or whether there could be a restriction of the opening hours of the drive-thru element itself.
