New careers guidance service for Northumberland residents set to be launched in Prudhoe

A new service has been launched in a Northumberland town in a bid to help young people "realise their full potential".

Prudhoe North county councillor Angie Scott has been working alongside Prudhoe Community Partnership and Northumberland County Council officers to deliver a new service based in the town.

Opening on June 10, the career and skills advice service will see attendance from the National Careers Service on a weekly basis as well as the council and the NHS's apprenticeship schemes and other local employers.

Coun Scott, who was elected in last year's elections after serving as a town councillor, said many residents had been calling for such a service in Prudhoe.

She said: "When I was campaigning to represent Prudhoe North as a county councillor for Northumberland County Council, parents and young people repeatedly expressed their concerns that there was no local access to careers guidance, information on training opportunities and help to find apprenticeships and jobs. I promised the people of Prudhoe that I would not let our young people be left behind and would help them to realise their full potential by bringing the services to Prudhoe.

"I researched services that other towns were offering to their young people and found that Brighton had a Youth Employment Hub which was an exciting new space in the heart of Kemptown village where friendly and knowledgeable staff were on hand to help young people consider options, make a plan of action and support them to achieve their goals. This was what we needed in Prudhoe.

"Working with Kevin Higgins, Employability and Regeneration Service, Northumberland County Council, Kay Vout at NCC and Caroline Warburton, Chair Prudhoe Community Partnership, (PCP) we have made it a reality. The service will be based at the Prudhoe Community Hub which is part of Prudhoe Community Partnership (PCP).

"This was previously the Hays Travel Shop and is in the heart of our community. Initially, one day every week, staff will be on hand to help and there will be a wide range of services and activities."

The chair of Prudhoe Community Partnership, Caroline Warburton, explained why the group had got involved.

She said: "One of the things we're very keen to do is bring the services back into Prudhoe that have disappeared. The employment services are one of those.

"Angie and I have been working with Northumberland County Council's Youth Employment service, looking at ways we can bring some employment services back into Prudhoe.

"This is about bringing the right information to the town for people to improve their chances in getting a new job."
