The new CEO of Newcastle Basketball has penned an open letter calling for support for the proposed new $82 million stadium at New Lambton.

Ian McKensey has been appointed as Newcastle Basketball's chief executive officer. In the open letter Mr McKensey said he took up the role after 20 years in leadership roles across sport, education, retail and government.

"I feel incredibly honoured to now lead an association that has been such a big part of my life," the open letter to members and stakeholders states.

Mr McKensey said he was "keenly aware of the significant challenges" the association faced due to the Broadmeadow stadium nearing the end of its useful life and the lease expiring in 2028 and urged people to support the proposed development at Wallarah and Blackley ovals.

"Securing a new facility is critical-not only for basketball but for the many community organisations that rely on indoor spaces for sports and wellbeing activities," he said.

"As we enter a critical stage in this journey, your support is more important than ever. This new facility isn't just about improving our playing conditions; it's about ensuring the future of community sport in our region for generations to come."

An environmental impact statement has been lodged for the stadium application, which is open for public submissions until November 11.

The proposed location has been controversial, with residents, sporting clubs and community members against the loss of green space and impacts on the surrounding area.

A Change.org petition supporting the new stadium has attracted 2000 signatures.

Mr McKensey said the association was also proposing to change its constitution and welcomed feedback.

Information sessions on the new constitution will be held on October 23 and 24 at 6pm at the Broadmeadow stadium.
