Luka Dončić has earned the admiration of NBA fans due to a stellar start to his young career, and it seems as though the Mavericks star’s peers share the same respect for him.
To wit, Nets star Mikal Bridges praised Dončić for his exquisite skill set during an interview on Sports Illustrated’s The Gaming Room.
Bridges joined college football player and social media star Jon Seaton for the latest episode of the show, which features guests discussing a wide range of topics while playing video games online. During the conversation, Bridges and Seaton played NBA2K, and the duo discussed an interesting debate over whether Dončić or Suns superstar Kevin Durant has the “deeper bag.”
In a bit of a surprising answer, Bridges didn’t skip a beat while choosing Dončić, stating that although both players have “serious bags,” the Mavericks guard takes the crown. The praise stands out even more when considering that Bridges revealed Durant as one of his “favorite players.”
Among the interesting points from Bridges was his contrast of Durant’s speed to Doncic’s speed.
“KD will cross over three times, get to his spot. Luka will cross over like 10 times before he gets to his spot. And [Luka's] pace, like he’s slow, right? KD could beat you with speed. Luka’s not beating you with speed, so [he's] gotta have even more of a crazy skill set to get to your spots,” Bridges explained.
Bridges made sure to highlight that although he believes Dončić has a deeper bag of skills, he’s absolutely not trying to disparage Durant. But it’s an interesting perspective from Bridges, a player who has emerged as one of the NBA’s better defenders over his first five seasons in the league.
This is a great breakdown from Bridges, and it’s a tough question for any player. Durant, who’s been a faces of the NBA since he joined the league, already is considered an all-time great. On the opposite side, Dončić burst onto the scene in 2018 and has earned All-Star status every year since his rookie season. He averaged 32.4 points per game last season, second only to 76ers center Joel Embiid.
