Netflix has found a writer for its upcoming Gears of War movie – Jon Spaihts, best known for writing Doctor Strange (2016), Dune (2021), and the forthcoming Dune: Part 2.
“Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates,” Spaihts said via Variety. “It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”
Netflix announced the movie in November 2022, alongside a Gears of War animated series. The film will seemingly adapt the original game’s storyline from 2006 – which many still consider one of the best Xbox 360 games ever.
The Gears of War movie is a joint effort between Netflix and developer The Coalition, which took over the franchise from Epic Games several years ago.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring Gears of War to life,” reads a statement from The Coalition. “Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves Gears of War. We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honor our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”
There’s yet to be a premiere date for the film, but let’s hope it turns out better than most video game adaptations – which are often quite bad.
