Netflix hit Black Mirror hints at return

One of Netflix’s biggest shows has teased its comeback, four years after its last season aired.

On Wednesday, the Twitter account for Black Mirror posted its first tweet since 2019.

Black Mirror, which originally aired on Channel 4 before being purchased by Netflix in 2015, gained a cult-following thanks to its anthology format in which each episode tackled a different – and invariably dark – storyline.

Although never officially cancelled or put on hiatus, there has been little news of the show since its fifth season in 2019. It had a shortened run of three episodes (down from the usual six) and featured stars such as Miley Cyrus, Anthony Mackie, and Andrew Scott.

While Wednesday’s tweet gave no further details, or even hints, about a sixth season, it did receive replies from the official accounts of Netflix and Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker.

What can fans expect?

Details on season sic of Black Mirror are scant, but in 2022, Variety reported a new cast had been signed up.

The cast of the first three episodes of the upcoming season (which is expected to have more episodes than season five) is reported to feature:

  • Josh Hartnett
  • Aaron Paul
  • Kate Mara
  • Zazie Beetz
  • Paapa Essiedu
  • Danny Ramirez
  • Clara Rugaard
  • Auden Thornton
  • Anjana Vasan

This information is yet to be officially confirmed by Netflix. But Black Mirror has previously used a mix of big names and lesser-known actors to play out its dystopian plots.

These have ranged from the British prime minister being blackmailed into having sex with a pig, to a singer being put into a medically-induced coma so producers can continue to plunder her mind for songs.

Fans all atwitter

As yet, there is no release date or trailer for the season six, but fans of Black Mirror have already taken to social media to express their excitement at the hint that the show is returning.

“Netflix, I will give you $1000 to confirm a new season please please please (I do not have $1000, just play along),” one fan tweeted.

Others have pointed out that the events of recent years have made the show’s dystopian storylines feel closer to reality.

“Feels like we’ve been trapped in a Black Mirror episode these past few years. Not San Junipero — one of the really depressing ones devoid of hope,” another person tweeted.
