Netflix has made the decision to cancel the action comedy series Obliterated after its first season. Developed by the creators of Cobra Kai, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, Obliterated initially received a straight-to-series order from TBS in 2019. However, due to TBS reducing its scripted output, the series became available and was subsequently picked up by Netflix in May 2022.
Obliterated follows a team of special forces as they successfully prevent a deadly threat to Las Vegas. After their mission, the team celebrates their accomplishment, only to later uncover that the bomb they had disarmed was merely a decoy. Now faced with the real danger, the team must combat their hangovers and other impairments to save the city.
Since its premiere on November 30, Obliterated managed to secure a position in Netflix's worldwide top 10 list of English language series for six consecutive weeks. Over the course of its run, the eight-episode season, totaling six hours and fifty minutes, garnered an impressive 29 million views. This translates to the equivalent of 29 million full runs of the series, highlighting its popularity among viewers.
Within the United States alone, Obliterated amassed a staggering 2.77 billion minutes of viewing over the four weeks it appeared on Nielsen's top 10 streaming charts. This impressive figure corresponds to approximately 6.76 million views in the country. With Sony Pictures Television serving as the production company, the same team behind Cobra Kai, it's worth noting that Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald have an overall deal with the studio.
In addition to the trio's involvement, Obliterated was executive produced by Dina Hillier, a colleague from Counterbalance Entertainment. The show's cancellation marks the end of its journey, leaving fans disappointed after its strong performance and popularity on the streaming platform.
