International bestselling author Neil Gaiman recently released his debut music album with the Australian indie band FourPlay String Quartet. Titled 'Signs of Life', in this new album Gaiman has not only written prose and poetry but also lent his vocals to some songs.
Talking about his first album and the collaboration, Gaiman told NPR in an interview, "The joy of getting to do this stuff with FourPlay is we got to do everything. So we got to do stuff like that where what I’m saying has to absolutely line up with what they’re playing. And then there are mad things like 'Bloody Sunrise', where I wrote a very silly song about a lonely, heartbroken vampire."
In another song 'Clock' in the album, Gaiman reads Shakespeare's Sonnet 12 along with FourPlay's music in the background.
This isn't the first time that Gaiman and FourPlay collaborated for a project. Back in 2010, they had worked together where Gaiman read from his novella 'The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains' with the band at Sydney Opera House.
In the interview, Gaiman also shared that this is just the beginning for his musical works. He revealed that the second season of 'Good Omens' series would have songs and music too. 'Good Omens' TV series is an adaptation of Gaiman's novel of the same name, which he had co-written with Terry Pratchett.
"Music is so incredibly powerful... I'd love to take something, whether it be 'Coraline' or 'The Ocean at the End of the Lane' or something completely new, and create something that you can experience that's musical," he further told NPR.
But whether it is writing novels or scripts for TV adaptations or making music, he is a storyteller at heart. "I'm a storyteller and I'm still not bored of it, not sick of it, and not ready to go off and get a real job yet," Gaiman said.
