Neighbours fed up with 'mess' at Wollaton estate that 'looks like it is still being built'

Neighbours say they are fed up with the "mess" at a Nottingham estate that "looks like it is still being built". Work on the Martin’s Reach estate, off Russell Drive in Wollaton, began in 2019 and residents started to move in to the new properties, which cost upwards of £500,000, around a year later.

Avant Homes was the developer behind the 110-home scheme, where housebuilding finished in 2021. Despite years of complaints, some pavements outside homes in the development have been left unfinished, with barriers blocking off the rougher parts.

Residents and councillors had previously highlighted both the pavements and roads were in a potentially dangerous state, but the housebuilder's past promises to bring the site up to scratch did not materialise. Bonnie Yan, 30, an accountant who lives on the estate, said: "It is amazing that it is still not finished, it has been a mess for so long now that I can't even manage to get angry about it anymore.

"They started work again just before Christmas, but not a lot seems to be being done other than blocking the road and our cars. It has all just been left unfinished, when people have lived here for years.

"They built all these houses, so from our point of view the roads and paths should be an easy fix. I cannot understand how it is still not sorted - we have had to report it repeatedly."

James Dean, 40, who moved into the estate in 2021 and works for parcel force, said: "People on the estate are frustrated. It has been a topic of conversation for a lot of neighbours, who are fed up with the roads and paths.

"It is very frustrating for people - I'm worried about it damaging my car. We don't know when it is all going to be finished."

Other residents said the estate looked like it was still under construction. One homeowner, who moved to the estate in 2019 and did not want to be named, said: "It just looks like it is still being built, when people have lived here for years. It is a bit odd how it is still not solved.

"The orange barriers that get put up are annoying too - sometimes you can't get out of your road. It's so bumpy when you drive around and you can't walk on some of the paths."

Avant Homes said contractors had conducted a review of the footpaths in the development ahead of the completion of works in April. An Avant Homes spokesperson told Nottinghamshire Live after we contacted them about the concerns: “Our contractors have conducted a thorough review across the development and will ensure the footpaths are secure for all residents.

“Work is making progress across the development and there is a detailed programme of phased activity being undertaken by our contractors which we expect to be completed in April.”
