Nearly half of Edinburgh kebab shops fail food hygiene in shock new study

A new study conducted on the food hygiene levels within Edinburgh takeaways has found that a huge percentage of restaurants have failed recent inspections.

It is understood that 43 per cent of kebab shops within the capital failed in the food hygiene inspection, 38 per cent of Indian takeaways and 36 per cent of Chinese restaurants failed as well.

The Scottish Daily Express reports how Food blog Pantry & Larder analysed more than 150,000 UK restaurants, takeaways, cafes, and pubs for its 2022 UK Food Hygiene Report.

In the overall ranking of restaurants and takeaways in Scotland, Dundee came in seventh with 16 per cent and Edinburgh was in eighth place with 15 per cent of its food establishments failing.

The study was pulled together by food expert Veronica Fletcher, who worked as a data analyst with Kantar, Aldi and Ocado. The study also found that in Scotland, 22 per cent of kebab shops and 21 per cent of pizza takeaways are failing to meet food safety standards.

Scotland has a scheme called the Food Hygiene Information Scheme. Each business will only be assigned a 'pass' or 'improvement needed' rating and in law it is advised they show their rating.

However, the analysis also revealed that Subway was the fast food chain with the highest number of failed inspection with 20, Dixy chicken with 14 followed and Caffe Nero with nine of its outlets failing all over the UK.
