One of the NFL’s broadcasting stalwarts will reportedly be absent when the pro football playoffs get underway on Jan. 13.
NBC has removed Al Michaels from postseason coverage "in (a) move he wasn't expecting," according to a Tuesday morning report from Andrew Marchand of The New York Post.
Michaels, 79, calls Thursday Night Football weekly on Amazon Prime with former Ohio State quarterback and commentator Kirk Herbstreit and has done so since 2022. Last season, Michaels contributed play-by-play to the Jaguars’ 31-30 wild-card win over the Chargers for NBC in an emeritus role.
Per Marchand, NBC's two playoff broadcasting teams will consist of regular Sunday Night Football broadcasters Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth and college football broadcasters Noah Eagle and Todd Blackledge. Tirico and Collinsworth will call two games—one on NBC and one exclusively on Peacock—while Eagle and Blackledge will also be featured on one.
Michaels, by acclamation one of the greatest play-by-play announcers in the history of North American sports, worked for NBC from 2006-21 and ABC from 1976-2006.
