Navi Mumbai Industrial zone reserved for academic and research organisations in IT and medical sectors

MUMBAI: In a move to create non-polluting industrial zones around Mumbai, the upcoming integrated industrial zone in Navi Mumbai will largely have academic and advanced research-oriented establishments dealing in robotics, artificial intelligence, genetics, IOT or blockchain etc.

Around 85% of the zone is already reserved for industrial activities and will eventually be made available to internationally and nationally acclaimed institutions in the fields of biomedics and other scientific and modern technological research, said a state government release.

The decision to reserve the corridor for academic and technology institutions and classify them as modern industrial corridors was taken by the state cabinet on TUesday held in the leadership of chief minister Eknath Shinde.

The project is expected to earn around Rs 60000 crore worth investment and make available employment to around 1 lakh people. In 2006 the state had decided to set up a special economic zone here. However, wIth the changing face of commerce and trade, the project could not be put into execution mode. Eventually the state granted permission to convert the project into an integrated industrial zone in 2018.

Understanding the need to create non-polluted industrial zones with modern industries based on fast-upgrading research and academics, and given the significance of the services industry, the government has opened the erstwhile special economic zone of Mumbai for industries dealing in information technology and medical research, the release pointed out.
