Nato countries launch joint operation to intercept Russian military aircraft

  • Sweden and Finland have conducted their first joint air interception mission, scrambling fighter jets to intercept a Russian military aircraft over the Gulf of Finland.
  • The Russian aircraft was travelling in international airspace in a region experiencing heightened alert following recent gas pipeline outages, drone sightings, and airspace incursions.
  • Swedish prime minister Ulf Kristersson highlighted the Quick Reaction Alert operation as a tangible demonstration of readiness, mutual trust, and robust Nordic- Nato co-operation.
  • The joint operation coincides with a warning from Danish intelligence regarding a low but growing risk of Russia conducting limited military attacks against bordering Nato member states.
  • Danish intelligence chief Thomas Ahrenkiel warned that potential Russian attacks could take the form of isolated strikes on infrastructure supporting Ukraine or false-flag drone operations.
