National media round-up as 'special' Miguel Almiron shines for Newcastle United

Here's what the national media had to say about Newcastle United's win over Fulham.

Newcastle dominate with electric attack

BBC Sport were full of praise for Newcastle's Paraguay international Miguel Almiron. Joe Rindl wrote: "With striker Alexander Isak picking up a knock on international duty with Sweden, Almiron's slick display and Wilson's return to action after four games out with a hamstring injury could not have been more timely.

"It's been a very difficult two weeks," Howe added to BBC Sport. "But it didn't show in our performance. Right from the start we had a good feeling, with good energy, and created chances early on.

"Obviously the red card made it easier, but I am very pleased with the players' response." Almiron's first-half strike was special. The Paraguayan found the net with a first-time volley, latching on to a looping pass from Bruno Guimaraes.

"And the 28-year-old thought he had scored a first Premier League hat-trick midway through the second half, chipping in a third only to see his effort ruled out by the offside flag. As for Wilson, the 30-year-old's opener means he has now scored four goals in four top-flight matches against the Cottagers.

"The former Bournemouth star had hit the post in the opening exchanges and went close to scoring a second in the 28th minute with a curling effort. Midfielder Joe Willock was also lively for Howe's side, picking up two assists and forcing fine diving saves from Leno either side of half-time."

Magpies thrash Fulham as Almiron grabs double

Ed Aarons of The Guardian said: "Marco Silva may have suffered worse days as a manager but probably not many. Nathaniel Chalobah’s red card eight minutes into his first Premier League start for more than two years paved the way for Newcastle to secure their second victory of the season as Fulham’s early momentum came to a shuddering halt.

"Goals from Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff and two either side of half-time from Miguel Almirón, one of them an outstanding volley, ensured Newcastle moved above their opponents in the top half of the table and gave their travelling supporters an afternoon to remember.

"For Silva – who also saw his top scorer, Aleksandar Mitrovic, limp off before half-time having failed to shake off an ankle injury picked up on international duty – it was an unwanted reminder that his side remain extremely vulnerable in defence after playing most of the match with 10 men when Chalobah was shown the earliest red card of the Premier League season."

'Worse than bad' day at the office for Fulham

Kathryn Batte of the Mail said: "As days at the office go, this was worse than ‘bad’ for Fulham boss Marco Silva. After being reduced to 10 men in the eighth minute when Nathaniel Chalobah was sent off for a reckless tackle on Sean Longstaff, Silva’s team capitulated against a better and hungrier Newcastle.

"Goals from Callum Wilson, Longstaff and two by Miguel Almiron sealed a 4-1 victory, the Magpies’ first on the road this season. A late consolation from Bobby Decordova-Reid did little to lift Fulham’s spirits.

"Newcastle might have scored more had it not been for Bernd Leno, who was the only Fulham player to leave the pitch with any credit. Silva’s side did not manage a shot on target until the 88th minute. They looked beaten from the moment Chalobah left the field.

"The midfielder flew into an unnecessary tackle, missing the ball and catching Longstaff with his studs. Referee Darren England initially gave a yellow card but after a VAR review the decision was changed. It was a reckless, potentially dangerous tackle that could have seriously hurt Longstaff. The Newcastle midfielder came away unscathed, but Fulham did not."
