Natural History Museum to reopen hidden gallery after eight decades

  • A hidden gallery at London's Natural History Museum that has been closed to the public since 1943 will reopen on 16 September.
  • The 18-month Nature and Us exhibition features 50 remarkable objects exploring humanity's evolving relationship with the natural world.
  • Key items on display include a miniature Crystal Palace dinosaur model, a Victorian monk seal skeleton, and a 400,000-year-old hand axe.
  • The initiative forms part of the NHM150 transformation project, which aims to unveil a new or revitalised gallery annually leading up to the museum's 150th anniversary in 2031.
  • Located on the second floor of the Waterhouse building, the experimental space allows visitors to provide feedback that will shape a permanent gallery scheduled to open in 2029.
