National Grid confirm power blackout decision with major World Cup effect on England vs Wales

The National Grid will not be implementing a scheme to pay households for not using energy tomorrow night - Tuesday, November 29.

Initial plans by the UK energy company were created due to ongoing worries over shortening supplies, but the emergency winter electricity plan has not been activated due to an expected shortage of backup power from France.

The timing of the decision comes on the eve of England's giant World Cup clash against Wales which kicks off at 7pm on Tuesday night.

The game will likely be watched by millions of fans all planning on using TVs as well as using heating and kettles throughout the night as temperatures continue to lower.

The issue that triggered this is that energy forecasts broadcast a significant drop in the power that the UK can import from France. It would have been the first time that such measures had been introduced to avoid blackouts.

The National Grid had made provisional plans months ago to prepare for a tough winter and the demand-flexibility scheme would have allowed customers to sign up and use less power and energy in critical hours in order to help stabilise the nationwide usage, being paid for their services.

As it happens, the scheme is not set to be put into place on Tuesday and shouldn't affect fans looking to watch Gareth Southgate's Three Lions. England know that anything but a heavy loss to Wales will secure their passage to the knockout phases.
