National Green Tribunal orders monitoring panel to check pollution of river in Salem

CHENNAI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the government to constitute a monitoring committee, headed by the chief secretary, within two weeks to restore the water quality of Thirumanimuthur river. The river, near Kollapatti and Mallasamudram in Salem and joins the River Cauvery, has been polluted by discharge of untreated sewage and industrial waste into it.

The NGT also asked the State Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to take action against industries, individuals and municipal bodies under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 for polluting the river.
