Natalie McNally - family raise over £11,000 for Women's Aid

The family of Natalie McNally have raised over £11,000 for Women's Aid in memory of the murdered Lurgan woman.

Tragically, the 32-year-old was murdered in her Silverwood Green home on December 18 last year.

She was 15 weeks pregnant at the time of her death, with a baby boy she had planned to call Dean.

Her family have since rallied to create a series of events aimed at raising funds for causes close to Natalie's heart, with the latest a Power Brunch event for women in Natalie's home town of Lurgan.

Over 100 women attended the event on Saturday, where pink and blue decorations paid tribute to the young mum-to-be and her lost baby boy.

Natalie's cousin Gemma Doran said the event was aimed at bringing women together and continuing Natalie's outspoken nature when it came to causes she fought for.

"Natalie was such an activist - she may have been petite and quite small, but she really had a voice," Gemma told Belfast Live.

"She might not have that voice anymore, but we're going to carry on her voice.

"We held one (a power brunch) in Dublin, it came off the back of an idea of a good friend of mine who runs a women's circle.

"It was such a success and after that day we knew we wanted to bring this to Natalie's hometown of Lurgan.

"It's all about bringing women together and empowering women, something that we don't do often enough."

The "we" Gemma refers to includes Hollie Donnelly, Natalie's sister-in-law, who said it was all about creating a positive legacy for her.

"We as a family don't want Natalie to be remembered for what happened to her, we want her to be remembered for the beautiful young lady that she was," she said.

"We just want to celebrate Natalie and raise funds for Women's Aid.

"We were totally overwhelmed with the response - we had put up just asking for raffle donations, we've been able to do this raffle but we've took prizes from the donations and we're using them for other events which is just amazing.

"By doing good, you feel good and it's sort of distracting you from the reality of what's happened.

"I know if this had happened to any one of us, probably 100 times better than what we're doing, but we're trying our best to do her proud."

Her childhood best friend, Jayne Doran, completes the trio of women behind Saturday's event and she told Belfast Live that it marked an opportunity for the community to show their support for the McNally family too.

Natalie's mum Bernie was presented with a print of the lyrics of her daughter's favourite song , "Human" by The Killers, in a touching moment on Saturday.

"I think it just breaks everybody's heart what's happened," Jayne added.

"It's so important that we remember Natalie for being so effervescent and bubbly and a real passionate activist.

"By doing events like this, it's keeping Natalie's whole being in the forefront of people's minds and that keeps her legacy alive which is super important for the family."

Saturday's brunch saw practical advice for women facing violence as well, with an instructor from Dublin showing self-defence skills to those gathered.

Gemma said that, combined with inspirational speakers and a chance for women to come together, was something Natalie would have been proud of and that there was more still to come.

"We've got a year long series of events ahead so this will not be the last that you hear of us," she said.

"This is to remember Natalie and not just Natalie but baby Dean that we lost too and the whole future that she and baby Dean had.

"It's been a real focus for us and we can all agree on that - we've been able to pour our grief into something so loving and it's allowed us to keep her memory alive."

One man has been charged with the murder of Natalie McNally and is awaiting trial.
