As rioters swarmed towards the US Capitol, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she hoped Donald Trump would come to the complex so she could "punch him out".
The previously unseen footage was published by CNN just hours after the House select committee investigating the attack on Thursday October 13 voted in favour of issuing a subpoena to the former President.
In the video, Pelosi can be heard saying: "I want to punch him out, and I’m going to go to jail, and I’m going to be happy."
The tense moment was filmed by Pelosi's daughter Alexandra Pelosi who was with the Speaker as the attack was underway.
Politicians including Pelosi and then Vice-President Mike Pence were being specifically called out by rioters with a gallows erected outside the Capitol.
Thankfully Pelosi and many of the others were evacuated from the Capitol building to nearby Fort McNair.
As rioters broke into the building in the heart of Washington they were calling for Pelosi to be brought out. In the footage one rioter wearing a MAGA hat can be heard shouting: "Bring her out here. We're coming in if you don't bring her out."
One clip, published by CNN, shows Pelosi speaking to staff as protestors can be seen flooding towards the Capitol. In it, Pelosi's chief of staff, Terri McCullough, reports that Trump had been"dissuaded" from coming to Capitol Hill to join his supporters.
McCullough says: "They told him they don't have the resources to protect him here.
"So at the moment, he is not coming, but that could change."
Pelosi responds: "I hope he comes. I want to punch him out. This is my moment. I’ve been waiting for this. For trespassing on the Capitol grounds.
"I want to punch him out, and I’m going to go to jail, and I’m going to be happy."
On the day politicians planned to certify the 2020 election results Trump held a large rally nearby in Washington. He called on those attending to march to the Capitol building.
In the closing moments of his speech Trump said: "And we fight. We fight like hell. And if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore."
During the ensuing riot more than 140 police officers were injured and multiple people killed.
Despite being temproarily evacuated, members returned to the Capitol at a little after 7pm to finish the process.
Since then, more than 880 people have been arrested in connection with the violence, with more than 400 guilty pleas so far.
Yesterday's meeting of the committee investigating the violent 2021 attack could be the last before the panel releases its final report, expected before the November 8 midterm elections.
The panel has been investigating the attack on the Capitol for more than a year, interviewing more than 1,000 witnesses.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that in early June, about a third of Republicans said Trump was at least partly responsible for the deadly attack. By late July, the share of Republicans with that view had risen to two in five.
The committee has used the hearings to build a case that Trump's efforts to overturn his November 2020 presidential election defeat was illegal.
They finished the panel meeting by voting unanimously to subpoena the former President.
“We must seek the testimony under oath of January 6th’s central player,” said Republican Liz Cheney, the committee’s vice chairwoman this evening.
"He is the one person at the center of the story of what happened on January 6. So we want to hear from him," said the panel's Democratic chairman, Representative Bennie Thompson.
