NAKHON SAWAN: The Nan River has overflowed into parts of Muang and Tha Tako districts in this northern province and high water levels have forced evacuation in urban areas.
The Nan River, a tributary of the Chao Phraya River that passes through Greater Bangkok, on Monday overflowed to riverside communities, especially those in tambon Kwae Yai of Muang district. Some houses were one-floor deep in water, forcing inhabitants to move upstairs.
Some Kwae Yai residents took refuge in tents ereccted on bridges, whle commuters resorted to using boats to reach their homes.
Numerous evacuations also took place in Tha Tako district, with residents moved to tents set up by the tambon's municipal office. The business zone of the district including the Tha Tako market was flooded two days ago, and on Monday the water level rose further - to more than one metre in some locations - due to persistent rain and overflows from the Huay Yai reservoir in Phaisali district.
Nakhon Sawan was among several upstream provinces designated by the government as water retention zones in in order to mitigate the threat of flooding in Greater Bangkok.
