Princess Kate's beautiful personal gesture during Welsh visit to grieving children who lost their dad

William and Kate met the wife and children of a man who died in a road traffic accident during their visit to south Wales. The Prince and Princess of Wales have visited today ahead of St David's Day carrying out various engagements to champion mental health initiatives and meet local communities.

As part of their trip, the couple visited the Welsh Air Ambulance base in Llanelli. There they spoke to Laura Davies and her two children Sofia, nine, and Owen, 11, in a private meeting in the charity's new family room. The room was inspired by the family's tragedy.

Mrs Davies said: "My husband and my daughter Sofia were involved in a road traffic accident on July 8 2021. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the emergency services on the day, we tragically lost Arwel in the accident. Arwel was a really, really special person and to have a room like this named in Arwel's memory, and for it to be recognised by Prince William and Princess Catherine, is a testament to the special person he was.

"I think it's overwhelming that Prince William and Princess Catherine are involved in today's visit. This means a huge amount to the children, it's a lasting legacy for them as to how special daddy was."

William and Kate started their day with a tour of a new garden that is being developed at Brynawel Rehabilitation Centre near Pontyclun. The site will include a collection of allotments where individuals can have their own space to learn and grow their own produce. It will sit alongside a communal sensory and herbal garden, a mud kitchen, and an interactive learning space.

The Royal Foundation has convened national and local organisations to support the design and build, as well as provide funding, tools, plants, seeds and materials for landscaping. They then visited a community leisure centre to hear how sport and exercise can support mental health and wellbeing, before the trip concluded at the Wales Air Ambulance charity in Llanelli.
