While some parents spend the full nine months brainstorming baby names, others know exactly what they're going to name their child before they're even conceived. However, one woman has been left questioning her "shortlist of names" after her family shared their dislike for every single one of them on her list.
The woman, who is named after a US state, explained how she wants to continue this "theme" with her own children, naming them all after various states in her home country. She said: "Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to keep with that theme. So if we have a baby girl, her name will be one of several states I have chosen. I used to be excited to tell people - I thought I was super clever. But now I've become apprehensive to tell anybody."
She went on to explain how her mother-in-law made her dislike for the idea abundantly clear - and says others react with an 'Oh' when she tells them the names on her shortlist.
"I am torn between Alaska, and Nebraska," she added on Reddit. "My problem with Alaska is that I've seen Alaska already, and in my hipster need to be different, I'm leaning towards Nebraska.
"My mother-in-law absolutely hates it, and everyone else I tell gives me that, 'Oh' reaction.
"I've even had one lady suggest I choose a place instead of a state, such as Savannah, saying 'I like Savannah, that one is nice.'"
She sarcastically added: "It is really starting to bother me and make me even question whether or not I should even be allowed to name this baby."
While most users encouraged her to go through with naming her baby after a US state, others told her to keep her baby's name quiet until after the birth.
One user said: "We don't tell names until they are born - simple as that.
"People always have something to say about names and we don't want to hear someone bad mouth our name, so no one knows until they see them.
"If they have the balls to bad mouth afterwards I can say 'tough cookies' or refuse to let them hold the baby."
Another user added: "I love names after states. I have several friends named Georgia, Missouri, Cali, Virginia, and no one ever forgets their name because it is different."
A third user said: "My old manager's name was Missouri, and I always loved how she introduced herself, "My name is Missouri, like the state.' She was the greatest lady."
