The Congress party staged nationwide protests on September 25 demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. In Delhi, the Youth Congress and the Delhi Pradesh Congress held separate demonstrations.
Both groups planned to march to the Election Commission of India’s office, but police stopped them near their respective party offices. During the Youth Congress protest, a worker portrayed Gyanesh Kumar, appearing with chains bound around his hands. Meanwhile, at the Delhi Pradesh Congress protest, an individual pasted photographs of Gyanesh Kumar onto his body and identified himself as the Chief Election Commissioner.
In both protests, workers alleged that Gyanesh Kumar had colluded with the BJP to “murder democracy,” asserting that nothing short of his resignation would be acceptable.
Opposition parties have intensified their demand for the CEC’s resignation following an Indian Express report. The CJP has also issued a 48-hour ultimatum, stating that if the demand is not met, the party will launch the “CJP 2.0” movement from Jantar Mantar.
