Murder She Wrote star Angela Lansbury dies aged 96, acting icon's family confirms

Film and TV icon Angela Lansbury has died aged 96, the star's family has confirmed.

With one of the longest careers in the entertainment industry spanning eight decades, the Irish-British and American actress was beloved by generations for her work on the screen and stage. She became a household name around the world with her role as Jessica Fletcher in the whodunit series Murder, She Wrote.

Her family said in a statement: “The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1:30 AM today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, just five days shy of her 97th birthday," NBC reports.

With dozens of starring roles to her name, Angela was also known for her work on the stage in the likes of musicals Gypsy, Sweeney Todd and The King And I. She first gained stardom after playing the leading role in the Broadway musical Mame in 1966.

Angela became beloved by film audiences spanning generations, from starring in the 1971 film Bedknobs and Broomsticks to lending her voice to the 1991 Disney hit Beauty and the Beast. In more recent years, the actress starred in films such as Nanny McPhee and Mary Poppins Returns.

Angela was showered with awards throughout her incredible career, including BAFTA and Tony Lifetime Achievement Awards, five additional Tony awards, six Golden Globes, and an Olivier Award. She was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth in 2014.

Born on 16 October 1925, Angela died just days before her 97th birthday. Tributes have been pouring in from around the world for the cherished acting icon.
