MUMBAI: Eighteen months after the Crime Branch busted a gang selling newborn babies, a civil court has allowed the "adoptive parents" to be appointed legal guardians of six minors "rescued" by police. The six couples had told the court they accepted the children without adoption procedures and brought them home as they were unable to conceive despite being married for a long time.
The couples said the babies were abandoned by their biological parents within days or weeks of their birth. Allowing the pleas, subject to Bombay high court's decision, the civil court said welfare of the child in such cases is paramount.
